The Bernina Express is one of the most scenic journeys in the world and certainly one of the most amazing ways to cross the Alps. It transports you from Lugano, Switzerland, to St. Moritz, Switzerland, with a short stop in Italy on the way.
Swiss Tour: Bernina Express

On the bus ride from Lugano to Tirano
The journey begins in the vibrant city of Lugano, where you catch the Bernina Express bus from the northern part of the square of the Lugano railway station (Piazzale Nord). A leisurely three hour ride will transport you to the town of Tirano, located in the Lombardy region of Italy at the base of the Italian Alps. Tirano is famous for its historic architecture, including the stunning Basilica of Madonna di Tirano, and its vibrant local culture. It is here in Tirano, after a short break to enjoy some lunch and a gelato, that you board the train to St Moritz.
Once you board the train, you will be transported to a world of stunning natural beauty. The train initially winds its way up through the Poschiavo Valley, offering breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks, crystal clear lakes, and lush forests. The windows of the train are large and provide an unobstructed view of the surrounding landscape.

The Brusio Spiral Viaduct is a circular railway viaduct located about 25 minutes into the train journey. It is known for its unique spiral design and is considered one of the most iconic landmarks on the Bernina Express journey. The viaduct is built in a spiral shape, allowing the train to gain height gradually, without the use of steep inclines or switchbacks.
